The first summer movie blockbuster (in my opinion) is Iron Man 3 and what a way to start off the summer!!! When I walked out of the theater after seeing Iron Man (1), I said to my husband, “…you know it’s a good movie when you have no history with the comic book and you still LOVE the movie!” I felt exactly the same after this installment of the Iron Man franchise. I have to admit I was a little leery, although I enjoyed Iron Man 2, I felt it fell short of the spectacularness (I’m sure that’s a word…somewhere) of the first movie, but Iron Man 3 more than made up for it.
As always, Robert Downey Jr. was/is Tony Stark in every conceivable way and he is such a pleasure to watch. Tony is struggling with some “things” from The Avengers movie and he taps into his emotions more so than in previous films. I liked that while struggling he still remained Tony Stark – smart-ass, quick-witted, honest, and fun-loving. Iron Man 3 is worth seeing if only to watch Robert Downey Jr. be Tony Stark (I’ve tried, and I just can’t imagine anyone else even somewhat capable of being this character) – when I boil it down, Downey Jr. makes the Iron Man movies work (for me, anyway).
Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper gets to be more quick-witted and a bit of a bad-ass herself – I liked it! Two other bright spots (besides Downey Jr.) were Ty Simpkins (Harley Keener aka the kid) and Ben Kingsley (the Mandarin). Harley could be a “Tony Stark” in the making and he definitely holds his own with Stark. Ben Kingsley is a surprise in this role and extremely enjoyable!
I laughed out loud, I gasped and covered my mouth in surprise, my heart cheered, and I left the theater smiling – as far as I’m concerned, it was a great start to the summer movie season!!! Just a note (in case you don’t catch on while everyone else is still seated in the theater or you watch it at home) at the end of the credits is something that will make you smile. 🙂
