I went to the 10 pm showing of the The Host on Thursday night. I read this book a few years ago (enjoyed it) and all the previews I saw made me very excited to see the movie. In my opinion (if you’ve read my previous blogs, this might make you smile), it was a good movie. The guy sitting a few seats away did not share my opinion – he thought it was boring (FYI). I am not so familiar with the book that I got caught up in any adaptation changes (in fact, I had forgotten she even had a little brother). That being said, I wasn’t sure about Saoirse Ronan playing the main character(s) – I had pictured Melanie Stryder “sturdier” than that, but I was pleasantly surprised. Saoirse was vulnerable, strong, confused, emotionless, and humorous when needed.
Recently, I’ve been taken by (drawn to, if you will) secondary characters, but that wasn’t the case here. Maybe because the main stage is shared by so many to make the story work, I don’t know. The love triangle (actually has 4 “souls”) is funny, confusing, and an interesting story. William Hurt, Diane Kruger, and Chandler Canterbury made me want to think before I assumed anything (pretty good lesson).
Living simply is another reaction, thought, idea that was ignited by the movie. I know in the story it’s a matter of survival, but because of that they are quite ingenious. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE indoor plumbing, hot water, electricity, etc. – basically modern conveniences, but I waste a lot too and am probably too comfortable with all I have. If I don’t have to work for it, I probably don’t value it enough – just a little food for thought.
