I’ve mentioned a few things in previous posts…
1. I think many things constitute a good escape, obviously movies, but also books
2. I have a job that allows me to listen to books on tape (my iPod)
3. I live in an area that has an AWESOME library!
I bring these points to your attention because I want to talk about some of the books I’ve recently read (or listened to). Actually, it was a book that finally convinced me to start this blog (I know, odd since I haven’t really talked about books yet). A very brief history (or explanation) – I’m part of a book club and somehow I’m the one that chooses the books we read. Because of this I’m always looking for, asking about, and investigating (that sounds too official) new books to read. I try to use as many resources as possible (friend’s suggestions, magazine articles, websites, etc.). One of the best websites I’ve found is fantasticfiction.co.uk; seriously you should check it out! So, the book that prompted me to start this blog came from a list of books a friend had read (she included her thoughts on some).
“A Discovery of Witches” by Deborah Harkness was surprisingly enjoyable. It wasn’t a life-changing book, it didn’t spark new and interesting discussions in my life, but it did allow me to escape and that was enough. I’m finding that I enjoy stories that explore different versions of lore. For instance, this book has vampires, witches, and demons but the “traditional” rules about these creatures aren’t used. Fiction is just that, fiction and I like it!
Jodi Picoult has become a favorite author of mine. She weaves multiple stories into one and takes you along for a great ride. My book club is discussing “Between the Lines” this month which is co-authored by Jodi and her daughter. What happens to the characters of a story when you close the book? “Between the Lines” explores that idea and whether the reader can make any lasting changes. FYI, this book is not typical of Jodi’s other books.
Anyway, I just wanted to start talking about the books I’m reading – as I read more, become inspired, or simply want to share an escape I’m sure this format will change. Maybe I’ll introduce you to a new author or you’ll discover a new (or lost) love for books – whatever happens in your life I sincerely hope it makes you smile!
