I’m still amazed or surprised when movie trends (not sure if that’s the right phrase) hit. For instance, “White House Down” and “Olympus Has Fallen” – both movies are about the White House being taken over by invaders and are being released within 3 months of each other. I don’t remember a movie about this subject anytime recently; therefore, a new movie trend. I can say Olympus Has Fallen was quite enjoyable (not sure if that’s the right word), maybe entertaining (not quite right either), how about I liked the movie (there, that works)!
There have been many actors in many movies to portray the president of the United States – I really liked Aaron Eckhart as our president. He was strong, compassionate, fun-loving, and didn’t give up. Gerard Butler epitomized what I think (key words) a secret service agent should be – loyal, real, caring, honest, and totally badass! In fact, some of the fights and “interrogation” (used lightly) were a little difficult for me to watch – I do okay with what I call long distance violence (gun shots, bombs, etc.) and struggle with up close violence (fist fights, knife fights, etc.). Anyway, Mike Banner (Butler’s character) is someone you want on your side because he’s willing to do what it takes (kind of like Jack Bauer). I was also impressed with how the Secretary of Defense was written – she was tough, funny, and extremely loyal to her country – great job Melissa Leo.
There is a scene toward the end of the movie that really builds and when it was resolved I heard the theater exhale. I love it when there is an audience reaction like that – it makes the movie more alive in some ways. I also love it because it’s not guaranteed – every audience is different and that can make the movie a little different each time as well. Just one more reason I LOVE going to the movies (that and the previews)!!!
