I’ve been looking forward to seeing The Great Gatsby since before it was supposed to come out at Christmas, so I was a little concerned I had built it up so much I would be disappointed. I need not have worried, Baz Luhrmann and Leonardo DiCaprio did not disappoint! I had read the book (for the first time) a few years ago so I was familiar with the story and was excited to see this version brought to life.
Baz Luhrmann was an excellent choice to do this movie! I’m not sure anyone else could’ve captured the extravagance, beauty, and wealth (especially visually) like he did. The parties, the estates, and the clothes are stunning! Luhrmann immerses us into a world that is almost unbelievable, but somehow manages to find a way to anchor it in reality (at least movie reality).
When my husband & I talked about the movie (before I went to see it) he said he hoped DiCaprio would do a good job, Redford had left pretty big shoes to fill. I have always thought DiCaprio will be our generations Redford, Gable, Bogart and The Great Gatsby reaffirmed that opinion. He balances desire, optimism, and unhinged reality well. I want to befriend Gatsby but I’m not sure I can trust him (Nick Carraway’s dilemma). DiCaprio gave life and understanding to Jay Gatsby that I did not see or grasp simply from reading the novel. He was just the man to bring this literary character to life.
Toby Maguire as Nick Carraway struck the perfect balance of awe, intrigue, a little jealousy, and moral fortitude that would make Fitzgerald proud. Daisy Buchanan, one of literature’s selfish and somewhat pitied heroines is brought to life beautifully by Carey Mulligan. Almost from the first moment Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan enters the screen I disliked him (well done Joel!). As you can tell, I enjoyed the movie. It was beautiful to watch, fun to experience, and I really want the soundtrack!
