My mom asked me to go through some of my childhood books and choose ones to give to my nieces. This turned out to be a very emotional trip down memory lane and I discovered a few things about myself and my love of books. First, my love of books started when I was very young. I recalled some precious memories while simply looking at the covers of my favorite childhood books. I discovered books that were gifts from both my grandmothers (one for my first Christmas and one for my second Christmas). I found a copy of “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein with the sweetest note inside (to my parents about me) from a name I don’t recognize but will ask about. I found the book my mom (& little brother) gave me when he was born. I found some of my all-time favorite Dr. Seuss books (these I can’t wait to share with my nieces). I found some favorite books that were taped back together. I could remember entire stories at just a glance. Needless to say, I enjoyed this time and cherish the memories those books recalled.
Second, I love that those books were there for me to make that trip. Let me explain, I don’t buy (physical) books now for a couple of reasons – I don’t have much room and I have access to an amazing library, but sometimes having a worn and well-read copy of your favorite book can bring about an escape simply by holding it, or reading an inscription, or a note you made in the margin. It was just another reminder to be diverse in my reading practices (electronic, audio, good old fashioned book).
I also want to say thank you to my parents for purchasing some awesome books, keeping the books (that was all my mom), reading them to me, showing me how awesome books can be (totally my dad), and for creating a childhood filled with possibilities – I love you guys!!!
