Before I went to see G.I. Joe:Retaliation I made sure I hadn’t missed a G.I. Joe movie between now and the last one. A quick search on IMDb told me I hadn’t and I was a little surprised at the length between movies in this franchise. Anyway, ultimately I enjoyed the movie, but I had mixed emotions/thoughts throughout the movie. It started off about like you’d think (covert op, middle of the night, very stealthy), took some time to show the non-soldier side of a few of the characters (this was funny), established the bad guys (some are questionable), good guys figure out what they need to do (insert original Joe), and saving the world commences (except London). This is what surprised me – somewhere around establishing the bad guys and the good guys coming up with a plan – I was bored. I actually considered leaving (it’s important to say I’m glad I stayed), and that’s pretty crazy for me. I wish I could elaborate more as to why this happened, what caused the boredom, or tell you specifically what part of the story lulls, but I simply don’t know.
Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson were both bad asses and smart asses, Channing Tatum was strong, funny, and always a pleasure to watch, and Adrianne Palicki does a great job being tough and feminine. I was intrigued by Flint (played by D.J. Cotrona), I really didn’t like him at the beginning, but he grew on me as the movie progressed. Apparently, none of the bad guys made much of an impression on me – interesting…
Another noteworthy (at least I think so) happening, I’ve mentioned multiple times that I LOVE previews (seriously, I really do) and a few of them before G.I. Joe made me want to see movies I really had no interest in before. Namely, World War Z – we’ll see what actually happens, but I am considering it now. Also, as much as I hate to admit this, the new Fast & Furious looks really good.
